Why Mount Hutt College?

For academic excellence and successful high school study – our academic and pastoral support systems help students to be successful with their goals. Each year level has a Dean who oversees academic progress of the students in their year level, and you will also be looked after by our International Dean Mr Ed Coles. Our international students are supported by the dedicated international staff team including our ESOL (English as a Second Language) teacher Mrs Kirsty Saxon and our Homestay Coordinator Mr Ole Wallis. Students who complete NCEA Level 2 or 3 and/or University Entrance qualifications are then ready for tertiary studies in New Zealand or around the world.

For a healthy and balanced lifestyle – Mount Hutt College is located in a beautiful setting at the edge of the Canterbury Plains near mountains, rivers and lakes. Each day you can enjoy our fresh air and clean environment.

For the multitude of sporting and cultural activities our district has on offer – whether it is in the outdoors – mountain biking, kayaking, playing golf, horse riding or skiing and snowboarding – or inside some of our great community facilities – playing badminton, swimming, going to a movie at the cinema, attending Scouts or St Johns, or joining drama or music groups. You will find many interests and activities that help you to make friends and become part of our community.

For new experiences – in school you can try new subjects and activities. In your homestay accommodation you will experience the ‘kiwi’ lifestyle and culture. We have trips with other international students and you can enjoy the beauty and wonder of New Zealand. In our friendly community you can mix easily and try new sports, hobbies or activities. Living in a new environment and culture allows you to develop your independence and to grow as a young person. Our staff are here to support you and help you achieve your goals.  You will also make great friendships with our friendly students who enjoy meeting students from other countries.

For excellence in English – your programme of study may involve ESOL lessons which help you progress in your ability in speaking, listening , comprehension and writing and/or your programme may focus on use and improvement of your English by immersion in subject classes.

To live in a safe environment with a caring family – our International Homestay Coordinator matches you to your homestay family and is there to support you from your arrival at Christchurch International Airport until the end of your stay at Mount Hutt College. His office is adjacent to our International Room and Mr Wallis is available should you have any questions.
