Learning Areas

Te Reo Māori holds a unique place within Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Ākonga will begin their Te Reo Māori education at the start of the New Zealand curriculum, regardless of their school year level, as they usually have no prior knowledge of the language.

As ākonga learn Te Reo Māori, they also deepen their knowledge and understanding of tikanga Māori and develop their own personal, group, and national identities.

As ākonga progress through the eight levels of the curriculum guidelines, they become familiar with an increasing range of vocabulary, increasingly complex language structures and text types, and more challenging contexts for the use of Te Reo Māori.

The range and complexity of the achievement objectives increase from level to level.
