Enrolment Information
Mount Hutt College is a co-educational school set in the rural township of Methven. Our school caters to the learning needs of students from Years 7 to 13.
For most of our learners, their main point of entry is at Year 7, with a small intake joining us at the start of Year 9.
During the year, we often have new families moving into our community, and we may accept students at other year levels if there is space available.
We welcome applications for future years. Access our enrolment form here.
School Zone - Are we in or out of zone?
Student eligibility for enrolment at Mount Hutt College falls into two categories.
1. Home Zone Enrolments: Please refer to the maps via this link. Please note that there is a difference between our home zones in Year 7-8 and Years 9-13. Families who are in our home zone will receive automatic enrolment to the school once an application is received.
2. Out of Zone Enrolments: For families outside of the zones outlined in the link above. Families can still seek enrolment but must do this via the ballot.
Ballot for Out of Zone Enrolments
If your family lives out of the Mount Hutt College home zone then you need to seek enrolment through the ballot process. A full breakdown of this process can be found below.
The school runs two ballots for out of zone students annually. To register for the ballot please click here.
Ballot Process
If the Principal determines that there are vacant spaces at any year level after accounting for all actual and projected home zone students, the Board may offer these places to out of zone applicants. If there are more out of zone applicants than available places, selection must be governed strictly by the following statutory order of priority:
- First Priority: Students accepted for a "Special Programme" run by the school (if applicable).
- Second Priority: Siblings of current students.
- Third Priority: Siblings of former students.
- Fourth Priority: Children of former students.
- Fifth Priority: Children of Board employees or Board members.
- Sixth Priority: All other students.
To accommodate mid-year arrivals and give prospective families procedural certainty, the college operates a structured Dual-Cycle Ballot system:
- Cycle A: Main Intake
- Advertisement: On or before the first Friday of June
- Applications Open: The first Friday of June
- Applications Close: The last Friday of August
- Ballot Held: Within 5 school days of closing
- Notification: Within 3 school days of the ballot
- Cycle B: Late Intake (For Vacant Spots)
- Advertisement: The last Friday of November (includes vacant spots)
- Applications Open: December 1st
- Applications Close: The second Friday of January
- Ballot Held: On or before the third Friday of January
- Notification: Within 3 school days of the ballot
Ballot Supervision & Sibling Rules:
Every ballot draw must be strictly supervised by an independent authority (a Justice of the Peace, a lawyer, or a member of the Police force) to guarantee total impartiality. If an applicant's name is drawn, any sibling applying within the same ballot cycle is automatically shifted to the top of the waiting list for their respective year level, subject to space availability.
Ballot Acceptance Timeframe:
Successful applicants will receive a formal 'Offer of Place'. Parents/caregivers must confirm their written acceptance within 14 days of the offer date; failure to comply will result in forfeiture of the spot, which will then be extended to the next candidate on the waiting list.
Bus Eligibility
The Methven Area Bus Group (MABG) runs independent of any enrolment scheme criteria. Bus eligibility will be determined by the MABG Bus Coordinator.
