Having come from a small school in Lauriston, I can definitely say that starting college was intimidating. However, from my first day of Year 7, I knew this school had everything I needed to make the most of my time here, as well as a supportive environment that helped me come out of my shell. With a large range of opportunities available at Mount Hutt College, I quickly took up as many as I could. This has led me to be involved in the Promotions Committee, the Wellbeing Committee, and the Social Committee, allowing me to get to know students in other year levels and understand the work that goes into organising school events. I have also had the opportunity to build my leadership skills through being a Senior Gold House Captain in 2024 and 2025, alongside five other strong individuals.
Sports are a big part of my life, and I love being in team environments where there is a strong competitive spirit. I am so grateful that Mount Hutt has so many different sports teams available to get involved in, and the strong emphasis on women in sport is inspiring. Throughout my years here, I have been involved in both Junior and Senior Netball teams, which allowed me to travel to the South Islands Tournament in Dunedin and to Australia. I have also travelled to Rotorua for Nationals with the Senior Touch Team for the past three years, and played IX Rugby in a mixed Ashburton College and Mount Hutt team, building lasting friendships and winning two finals, which has definitely been a highlight of my time here.
As a Head Student in 2026, it is a goal of mine to push participation of students in school life. This could mean signing up for the production, learning an instrument, joining a sports team, or becoming part of a committee. I truly believe these aspects of school teach the most valuable lessons and are something every student should get behind, as I know from experience how important they are in building friendships and developing essential life skills.
