Gateway Training Courses

Gateway

Sam Coldicott, Isaiah Carter and Ben Glass attended a Harness Safety course with Site Safe in Christchurch where they learnt how to work safely at heights.

During this course, they learnt the correct ways to fit and wear harnesses, how to operate safely at heights and what proper safety precautions had to be followed. This course was led by Andrew Quinn who was very informative and knew how to keep you listening. He showed them how to identify hazards associated with working at heights. This is where they talked about key concepts while working at heights one of the topics was fall restraints which talks about systems that protect users from approaching an unprotected edge, this eliminates the chance of a free fall meaning a free fall system or limited free fall is not needed. A limited free fall system is any fall that is less than 600mm fall arrest device. Andrew Quinn demonstrated how to apply safety harness systems. This part was the part the students enjoyed the most as they got to set up these systems where they went through all the precautions as if they were on the job.

The students would recommend this course to anyone who would be working at heights in their future job as this course offers a lot of knowledge on how to work safely at heights.

Emergency First Aid Training

During the last holidays, Steffi Furndofler attended an Emergency Care First Aid course through Workplace First Aid training in Christchurch. It ran over two days and it taught everything from learning how to emergency triage, what to do in isolated environments when there is an accident, how to use a spinal board and perform lifts and much more. This course provided Steffi with a qualification in Emergency First Aid and 14 credits towards NCEA. Steffi was enrolled because she is interested in paramedicine. The opportunity was given to her through Gateway. Steffi highly recommends taking a course like this because you never know what you may come across, and it was a great introduction to the industry.
