The following is the first of a new fortnightly column from a member of our school Leadership Team around what has been happening at school, what is on top right now and what is coming up.

2024 - We have lift off!

Following two weeks of careful preparation from our committed team of staff, Year 7-8 Orientation, Year 9 Surf Safe Day, the Year 11-13 Leadership days and Year 13 Leadership Camp, we finally had full lift off on Wednesday as our full school gathered together to welcome our new students and whānau at our Pōwhiri.

With 570 learners in the school in 2024 we have set a new high water mark for the school roll and have a record number of 75+ Year 13s to guide our school forward throughout the year. The addition of two new purpose-built classrooms to our gym, the development of a new Learning Support Hub and the future works planned for A Block, C Block and Agriculture/Trades area will all help us to absorb a roll that is likely to climb to 600 students over the next five years.

One of my messages to our whānau during our Pōwhiri on Wednesday was around the need to stay connected and engaged in our children's learning. Whilst many of us tend to feel the move to secondary school signals a transition to greater autonomy for our kids, the research suggests that whānau who continue to play an active role in supporting home based learning, and who stay connected to school, have their children achieve better outcomes.

For those whānau that are interested in supporting the school directly moving forward, I would strongly encourage you to consider joining our PTA. The next meeting of our PTA is scheduled for Wednesday, 14 February at 6:30pm in the school library.

Outside of joining the PTA there are a host of other events on the horizon that whānau are welcome to come and support.  These include our Senior Swimming Sports (Years 10-13) on Monday, 19 February, our Junior Swimming Sports (Years 7-9) on the Thursday 22 February, our Athletics Preliminaries on the Wednesday 28 February, and our Athletics Championships on Monday 11 March..

If you have any questions around upcoming events or activities, or any issues with your child's progress, please don't hesitate to reach out to either our team in the main office or your child's Kaiāwhina. By staying connected and working alongside each other, we can ensure that our tamariki get the most out of the 2024 academic year!
