Geo Field Trip - Queenstown
The Year 13 Geography class travelled to Queenstown for their field trip from the16th-18th June, this trip had two purposes. Firstly the class is studying tourism development as their Cultural Process for the external exam, for this they need to look at how an urban area is impacted by tourism development and use this case study in their end of year exams. The second part of the field trip was to collect primary data for their internal research assessment, which is comparing Queenstown as a tourist destination to Methven.
The students stayed at the Lakeland Christian Camp for the 2 nights they were away. The first day was spent travelling with a stop for a 'famous' Fairlie pie for lunch, the group arrived around early evening settling into the accommodation and then heading into Queenstown to collect data and have tea. Collecting data involved students asking tourists, around the streets of Queenstown, about what activities they would be doing or had done, while they were in the town. Then it was off to Ten pin bowling for a bit of fun, with some interesting scores taking place. Monday the group headed to Arrowtown in the morning for a presentation from the Arrowtown Museum about How Tourism in the Queenstown Lakes region had changed and impacted the area over time.
After this the group did a bit of gold panning, with several students finding gold. Monday afternoon saw the group head to the Skyline Gondola and Luge to try out one of the attractions, after lots of fun was had racing on the luge track it was back to the accommodation for dinner. Tuesday morning was camp clean up and then heading home with a stop at the Zipline, situated at AJ Hackett Bungy Kawarau, for the students to have a go and then also a pit stop to the go kart track at Highlands park Cromwell before travelling the rest of the way home.
