Gingerbread Whare Construction
The Year 11 Food for Thought students have been exploring the Te Whare Tapa Whā model of health that uses the four walls and the
foundation of a whare (house) to represent our wellbeing and demonstrate how the dimensions interconnect. We used the activity of planning and constructing gingerbread whare to highlight how the preparation, sharing and eating of food has impacts far beyond physical wellbeing, affecting all dimensions of hauora.
Student reflections following the activity:
“I think that each wall has to stand together for the whole house to stay up. The shows that the
four aspects of hauora need each other to be strong.”
“The house building showed that if one side is unstable, the house falls and if they are not
strong enough, it will fall.”
Taha wairua – spiritual wellbeing - “We all build our house differently and it shows that it’s
okay that we all have different beliefs and ways of doing things.”
Taha whānau – social wellbeing – “We supported each other during the activity and socialised
with new people.”
Taha hinengaro – mental/emotional wellbeing – “It made us feel good to work together to get
the whare completed and when we were done, we were proud.”
