Kiwi-Japan Student Collaboration Shines in Solar Energy Project

Last week, Mount Hutt College proudly welcomed 18 visiting students from the Municipal Omiya International School in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. These Year 9 students partnered with local peers for a week-long collaborative project focused on solar energy.

The joint initiative explored how renewable energy powers real-world facilities, taking inspiration from the nearby Ōpuke Thermal Pools and Spa, which uses solar technology to heat its water. Putting theory into practice, students designed and built their own solar ovens — capable of toasting sandwiches and making s’mores — to better understand sustainable energy solutions.

The project culminated in a student-led presentation at the Summit event held at Darfield High School. Joined by peers from Darfield, Geraldine, and Oxford High Schools, the Omiya-Mount Hutt teams shared their findings and reflected on their experiences.

Beyond the academic achievements, the exchange fostered meaningful cross-cultural friendships and deepened mutual understanding. For many students, this was not just a project — it was the beginning of a lasting connection. The bonds formed and memories shared are sure to become treasured parts of their educational journey and global outlook.
