Social Sciences in Action

Social Science

Over the past couple of weeks the Year 10 classes have been busy starting to unpack the topic “Managing Our Resources” within Social Studies.

Classes have been listening to our visitor, Katie Graham, from the Ashburton Museum  who talked about the local Māori resources used within this region and treated us to a  viewing of artifacts dug up on local beach archaeological sites. She also shared replicas of Moa bones and the ingenious raincloak, Pākē, that used flax, harakeke, for its time-consuming construction.

Mrs Brennan’s classes also ventured down to the Encounter to investigate local resources that have been utilised in this region, both in the past and recently. We noted how these have changed over time and how modern uses benefit the community. Many students had not visited this “resource” before and were engaged with the presentations and displays.

It is great to have access to this local knowledge that is not reliant on device use.
