Principal's Piece

Principal

As we conclude the final few weeks of the school year, and our seniors celebrate the end of the NCEA external examinations, there is still much for our students to get involved in.

Summer Quad, Year 8 Camp, Aoraki Junior Tournament week, Year 10 camp and plenty more have provided plenty of opportunities for our Junior School to remain busy and engaged both inside and outside of school.

With NCEA exams and our Junior Programme starting to wind down, most of our team at the college find themselves working in two spaces - one focussed on closing the loop on the 2023 academic year, and the other focussed on planning and preparation for 2024.

Our 2023 year has been an incredibly successful one and the successes continue to come thick and fast. One example of this is Flynn Whittaker, who recently broke the 40 year old school long jump record at the Canterbury Primary School Athletic Championships. Whilst this was a fantastic achievement, what made the achievement even more impressive, was that three MHC students managed to all break the record at the same event.

Whilst 2023 is winding down, there is still plenty ramping up. Our school property team is working hard to shape up the initial schedule of works that will culminate with a major development of A Block and two new rooms for C Block at the end of 2023. Our Trades and Agriculture teams are also starting the process of revisioning our programmes and are excited about getting the community involved via our upcoming event at the Mount Hutt Memorial Hall at 6:00pm on Thursday the 14th of December. For more information on this event please see the flyer for the Agriculture and Trades Evening in this newsletter..

As we cast our eyes towards 2024 there is much to be excited about:

  • Holiday works will see:

    • two additional classrooms (G2 + G3) added to the old squash court area in the gymnasium;
    • a new learning support area is being added to some of our existing rooms adjacent to the library.
  • The Board of Trustees have approved the purchase of three vans for the college.

  • We are forecasting additional roll growth for the start of the 2024 school year with the roll expected to reach 560 students

  • We have two overseas trips on the calendar next year:

    • a student exchange to Japan in May;
    • a Rugby and Netball trip to Australia in July.

In the week after school finishes all whānau should expect to receive an end of year update from the school that will include some important information for 2024. This will include:

  • Our approach around the forecast changes to the cell phone ban from the new Government.

  • Additional information around the School Donations Scheme and what to expect heading into the next year.

  • Our 2024 calendar dates.

We look forward to seeing many of you at our Year 7-8 and Year 9-10 Prizegivings on Wednesday the 14th of December.
