Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA)

Our Year 12 Students attended the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) Program at the Methven Resort. RYDA is aimed at encouraging young people to be active, responsible road citizens.
The one-day program featured hands-on workshops such as “Crash Investigators” and “Speed and Stopping” aimed at improving their understanding of road safety. Other activities, such as “Mind Matters” and “The I in Drive” helped students to reflect on how personal attributes and mindstate can impact their driving, and started them towards developing tools and habits to manage these and focus on the task at hand.
RYDA aims to not only help students take action and stay safe on our roads as drivers, but also as passengers; sessions included role-play where students practiced speaking up as a passenger and being agents for change against risky driving.
Mount Hutt College would like to thank RYDA and our police volunteer for this fantastic learning opportunity and Methven Resort for providing us with a venue for the day. We would also like to extend a special Thank You to our local Rotarians and the Ashburton District Council for their sponsorship, which means the programme can be provided for no cost to students.
