Leader's Letters

Rose Dargue

Over the past 3 weeks, Mount Hutt College students have been participating in many different events with a wide range of achievements. First I'd like to acknowledge our Arts sector within the school. The concert band went on tour, playing around Methven for all types of age groups with lots of positive feedback from the community, especially the Methven primary school students. Sticking with the musician theme, teams from Mount Hutt entered into the Rock Quest competition this year.  Salted Peanut’s bassist Quinn Bessai earned a Musicianship Award, Goodbye Thursday’s Bella Casey-Solly won the Best Song Award for her original song “Little Town,” and Goodbye Thursday earned Second Place out of 18 bands! Also, the Mount Hutt College Choir performed at Big Sing on Friday night and did a fantastic job. They were without Mrs Woodley for their final rehearsals and their performance, who unfortunately was ill, but they still did brilliantly. Thanks to Mrs McConnell and Mr Luddy.

For me, a highlight over the past few weeks was the sporting activities that Mount Hutt College and the area provide for us all.  First congratulations to the year 9/10 netball team who played in the Roncarlii tournament on Sunday the 16th May with a convincing win over St Kevin's and were able to score over 60 points. Mount Hutt also entered teams into the ASSS golf champs. One of the teams Mackenzie Currie, Kaidyn Broomhall, Blake Marett and Izaac Bruce shot 42. Tyler Maher, Diego Sungahid and Wynter Taylor-Harding played 18 holes together and shot 70 which is 1 under par. Finn McGrath finished 6th equal in the competitive section, and Charlie King finished 34th out of 51. Amazing effort to all those who participated.

The sport I am most passionate about is netball.  I enjoy this sport as playing within a team creates a greater connection with others in my area that I wouldn't normally be able to get. Currently, I am playing for the Methven Senior B Euroagri Team, the School South Islands A team, the Australian A squad Team and the Mid Canterbury U18 team. Currently the Mount Hutt college Netball teams are looking forward to the trip over to Australia (Gold Coast and Brisbane) with Rebekah Kalweit as Vice caption and myself as captain for the A squad. Caitlyn Mckay Rooney also taking the role of captain of the B-squad for the Australian trip.

Recently myself, Rebekah Kalweit, Ella Monk and Natie Touamoheloa, over the long weekend, played at Nga Punawai in the king's birthday tournament. This also includes the U16 Mid-Caterbury netball teams with Elsie Dargue, Tilly Johnson, and Georgia Monk representing Midcanterbury. A huge congratulations to all those being selected for the teams as it is very competitive for spots within the Mid-Canterbury region.

Lastly, the year 12 and 13s went to the school ball on the 31st May. Well done to Layla Manning head of the ball committee for putting many hours into organising the event. The theme of Bridgerton allowed herself and the social committee to execute the iconic floral aspects of the hit Netflix show. Many awards were given out such as King and Queen, Prince and Princess, two cutest couples and best dresses. A big thank you to the teachers and staff who also helped.

Ngā mihi,
