Origami and Pi Maths

Origami

Kia ora whanau,

A lot has been happening in the maths faculty over the past month and we’re excited to provide you with a brief update.

Being Prepared for Success

A gentle reminder to ensure your child comes prepared for their mathematics classes. A ruler, calculator, pens/pencils, and a whiteboard marker are essential tools for their journey through the world of numbers and graphs. Only by coming to every class with these materials can students be ready to engage and learn to their fullest potential.

Exploring the Beauty of Maths: Origami + Spaghetti Graphs

In recent weeks, some mathematics classes have embarked on an exciting journey delving into the captivating world of origami. Origami is not just the art of paper folding; it's also a beautiful example of the intersection between art and maths. Through this exploration, students have discovered the geometric principles and mathematical concepts underlying this ancient craft, enriching their understanding of both disciplines.

We have also been using spaghetti to graph trigonometric functions to give students deeper insight in the world of mathematics.

Celebrating Pi Day

Pi Day was an exhilarating celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi) here at Mount Hutt College. Over 50 students participated in the pi memorization competition, showcasing their dedication and mathematical prowess. Special congratulations are in order for Keeley Gailbraith, who astounded us all by recalling an impressive 108 decimal places of pi! As part of her well-deserved victory, Keeley had the honour of delivering a pie to Mr. Tantau's face, much to the amusement of everyone involved. While perhaps not the most dignified moment for Mr. Tantau, it was certainly a highlight of the day!

Pre-loved Calculator Drive

In our ongoing efforts to support every student's access to necessary resources, we are organising a pre-loved  calculator drive. If you have any scientific or graphics calculators lying around that would benefit from a new life with another student, we invite you to participate. Please reach out to Mr. Tantau ([email protected]) if you're interested in buying or selling a pre-loved calculator.

As always, we appreciate your continued support in nurturing your child's mathematical journey. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
