An Inspiring Visit to Hannah Kidd's Studio

Active Art

Active Wednesday Art students from Mount Hutt College recently went on an inspiring trip to the Alford Forest studio of renowned local artist, Hannah Kidd. The visit provided a fantastic opportunity for the students to gain insight into the creative process of a professional sculptor.

Hannah Kidd, is known for her distinctive and often life-sized sculptures, warmly welcomed the students. She talked about her artistic philosophy and shared how she transforms industrial materials into her distinctive works of art. The students were fascinated as she explained her process, which begins with detailed research and drawings, before constructing intricate steel frameworks. These structures are then clad in recycled corrugated iron, often enhanced with vibrant enamel or acrylic paints.

The tour of the studio was a highlight, with students marveling at the many different sculptures and ceramic works. Hannah’s sculptures, showing familiar animals and humans in everyday activities, sparked lively questions about creativity and technique. The visit served as a wonderful reminder of the artistic talent within our local community.  Our next task is to create a sculpture inspired by our visit.
