South Island Secondary School Sevens

Preview South Island Secondary School Sevens

On Saturday the 1st of November two teams travelled to Geraldine to take place in the South Island Secondary Schools Sevens tournament.

The Mount Hutt College U16 boys and a combined girls Mount Hutt College Ashburton College team along with 300 other students from around the South Island took part in some of the 46 games that occurred.  The U16 boys were in a tough pool with defending champs Christchurch Boys High, St Bedes and Condor sevens attendees Lincoln.  The boys finished pool play with a win over Lincoln, a close 2 point loss to St Bedes when down to 6 players and a loss to CBHS.

This put three teams in our pool on equal points and therefore rankings came down to point differential, with Mount Hutt coming fourth, the pool being decided by 2 differential points separating 2nd, 3rd and 4th.  This meant we played Central Southland College in the Plate semi final which unfortunately the boys were unable to take the win losing in the final seconds, the bulk of this team is eligible to play again in 2026.

The Combined Girls team played St Taki (Waitaki Girls and St Kevins Combined) first, winning comfortably and then a close 1 point game against St Hilda's from Dunedin, this put them in the Plate final against St Taki who defaulted the game. Thank you to Stirling Clark for coaching us again this year.

Well done to both teams and thank you to Coaches, managers and parents who supported the teams.
