Year 12 Start-Up Days Set a Positive Direction
Year 12 students began the year with two focused Start-Up Days designed to build confidence, strengthen relationships, and set a positive direction for the year ahead. Through a mix of interactive and reflective sessions, students were encouraged to challenge their thinking, step outside their comfort zones, and consider the kind of senior students they want to be.
The programme centred on practical skills that support success at school and beyond, including communication, self-awareness, resilience, and respectful relationships. Students explored shared expectations and developed a common language that will support learning, wellbeing, and positive behaviour throughout the year.
A key theme was kaitiakitanga — Year 12 students as guardians and role models of school culture. Like the kiwi in Tāne’s realm, students were encouraged to care for their environment and the people around them through everyday actions: welcoming others, listening before speaking, using respectful language, and being mindful of the impact of their words and behaviour.
Students were also encouraged to respond thoughtfully when challenges arise, reflecting on situations and moving forward with purpose and respect. As they look ahead to increased responsibility and leadership in Year 13, the Start-Up Days have provided a strong foundation for a settled, connected, and successful year.
The school extends its thanks to the Methven Resort for hosting the Year 12 Start-Up Days and to the management team for their generous support and flexibility. The venue provided an excellent setting for learning, connection, and reflection.
