Welcome Back from the Maths Faculty!
A huge welcome back to all our returning students and a warm greetings to those joining the MHC community for the first time. We hope you’ve had a fantastic summer break, if a bit wet, and are ready to get back into gear.
To help our students feel prepared and confident in class, please ensure they have their maths kit sorted for the start of the year. Having the right tools on hand from Day 1 allows us to dive straight into the fun stuff!
✏️ 2026 Maths Stationery List
- 2 x 1E8 (or equivalent) Maths Books: These are the standard quad-ruled books essential for keeping calculations and graphs organised.
- Calculator: All students must have a calculator! See below for more specific details
- 2 x Whiteboard Markers: We use these frequently for collaborative problem-solving on our classroom mini whiteboards.
- 30cm Ruler: A must-have for neat diagrams and geometry.
⚙️ The Calculator Guide
Please ensure your student has the correct model for their year level:
- Years 7*–10: A Scientific Calculator (e.g., Casio FX-82AU Plus II).
- Year 7s may opt for a budget pocket calculator if you’re worried your child might lose it…
- Years 11*–13 (NCEA): A Graphics Calculator is essential for NCEA levels. We recommend the Casio fx-9860GIII or the Casio fx-9750GII (or equivalent).
- A Scientific calculator will suffice for year 11s not taking Algebra/Calculus
- Note: These are an investment, so please use a permanent marker or label maker to put your child’s name on both the calculator and the lid!
🚜 Maths at Home
Maths is much more than just a classroom subject; it's a vital tool for life in Mid-Canterbury. We encourage you to engage with your child about maths at home whenever you can.
Whether it’s calculating bake times, doubling a recipe, tracking stock prices, or even discussing the finance and fuel economy on that Hilux they have their eye on—it all helps! Seeing the practical side of numbers builds huge confidence in the classroom.
We’re looking forward to a fantastic year of problem-solving and growth with your rangatahi!
