OIH Update

You may have noticed that construction on the new pole shed has slowed temporarily, but this is for a very good reason. We’re pleased to announce that the Opuke Innovation Hub project is moving forward with a smarter, more cost-effective plan. We've made the strategic decision to amend our plans and incorporate modern classroom facilities directly into the shed's design. This new approach will allow us to create a multi-functional space that serves our students and the community sooner and at a more achievable price point.
The original plan for a separate classroom hub was ambitious, but after extensive research and collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, we have developed a smarter, more integrated solution. Our new approach is to amend the plans for the pole shed, transforming it into a versatile space that can serve as both a workshop and a classroom simultaneously.
The new Pole shed Learning Hub will be a comprehensive facility and our plan is to include:
- Trades Workshop: A simulated industry environment for construction and tool use.
- Trades Classroom: An adaptable workspace for group learning and technology.
- Central Open Workshop Bay: A space for large construction projects.
- Agricultural Classroom: A hub for scientific exploration, data analysis, and group learning.
- On-site toilets and wash station: Providing a fit-for-purpose, all-in-one hub.
- Office spaces: For collaboration, planning, and meetings.
As we work through the logistics of this including amendments and consents and secure the necessary funds for the shed's amended design, progress is continuing with the practical garden space.
Phase 2, the Agricultural Garden Hub, is making good progress. Thanks to the invaluable support from Big River Builders and Bradfords Building, OIH students are gaining hands-on experience and a wealth of knowledge.
The garden area, which will include 144m² of garden beds, a large greenhouse, and a shade house, is on track to be completed by the end of the term. This space will also feature modern technology, including data sensors for scientific exploration.
The project is now focused on two clear priorities:
- The Shed and Trades Spaces: The top priority is to secure funding to complete the construction of the pole shed and fit it out for the Trades programme, with a goal of being ready for students by 2026.
- The Agricultural Classroom: Once the trades area is complete, the focus will shift to fitting out the dedicated agricultural classroom.
We are grateful for the generous support from the Mackenzie Charitable Foundation, The Lion Foundation, and Advance Ashburton Community Foundation – Johnson Brothers Fund.
