Careers Seminar
Can you help with a couple of upcoming Careers Department events?
Careers Seminar and Practice Formal Interviews.
Year 12 students are at a crucial decision making time in their lives. Do they finish their schooling at the end of year and move into employment or do they come back to year 13 and prepare for university?
The Mount Hutt College Careers Department is running a Careers Seminar and Practice Formal Interviews to help prepare them for their next step.
We were wondering if you are willing to help us this year in these events?
- Careers Seminar at the Methven Resort on Thursday April 30.
- Practice Formal Interviews Friday 1 May at Mount Hutt College
About the Careers Seminar
We would like to invite expressions of interest to present to our students on some of the following topics (or any topic that you think would be of benefit to a wide range of young people);
A special focus on:
- Job-hunting competencies, especially
- Successful interview skills, and
- Self advocacy (gaining confidence to express personal strengths and career goals)
- Life skills needed in the workplace;
Other topics could be:
- Navigating employment contracts and/or rights and responsibilities in the workplace
- Managing conflict and difficult relationships;
- Life and advantages of a university education
- Life and advantages of apprenticeships;
- Opportunities for young people in your industry/training organisation
- General healthy living issues, like
- How to navigate leaving home, moving to a new town, getting to know new people
- Advantages/opportunities of volunteering and other forms of community involvement
- Where can young people go for help if they are on their own?
- - etc
Presentations could take the form of presenting to the whole group (96 students) in one time slot or to smaller groups as workshops rotated throughout the day. Let me know your preference
About the Practice Formal Interview
Each year 12 students present a CV to a potential (mock) employer, who interviews the student in a formal situation and gives feedback to the student on how they went in the interview and tips on how to improve their CV. To make this more relevant to our students it would be great to get interviewers with a wide range of life and work experiences.
