Filipino Language Week at Mount Hutt College
The Cultural Committee celebrated Filipino Language Week at Mount Hutt College,
allowing students and teachers to learn more about the Filipino language and culture.
Filipino Language Week ( Linggo ng Wika) and the broader Filipino Language Month
(Buwan ng Wika) are celebrated in August across New Zealand to coincide with national
language observances in the Philippines and the birthday of the Father of the National
Language, Manuel L. Quezon.
During lunchtime, our students could enjoy a selection of Filipino snacks and sweets, while
also learning more about the Philippines through our cultural display. We also had karaoke,
where students could come along and enjoy with their friends, singing their hearts out.
Karaoke is an important cultural activity in the Philippines as it is part of a communal
activity in every celebration, whether with family or friends. Some students also wore their
cultural dress of the Baro't Saya to show their cultural pride and honor their heritage.
The day was a great way to share our culture with the school and encourage others to learn
more about the Philippines. A big thank you to everyone who helped organise the event,
brought food, helped at the stalls, and took part throughout the day. It was great to see so
many people getting involved and celebrating Filipino culture with us!
