At the recent Cycling New Zealand Age Group Nationals that were held in Nelson from the 10th to 12th of April, three students from Mount Hutt College were competing for their local Tinwald Cycling Club.

Racing in the Under 15 Boys’ road race over 35km, Oscar Gorrie (Year 9), competing at his first National Championship, delivered an impressive performance to finish 9th overall.

In the Under 17 Boys’ 65km road race, Kaidyn Broomhall (Year 12) showed great determination, completing the demanding course in hot and exhausting conditions.

Competing in the Under 19 combined Senior Open Men’s division, Jack Gorrie (Year 12) demonstrated resilience in the 26km individual time trial. Despite suffering a dropped chain, he recovered strongly to secure the bronze medal on a challenging, hilly course in near-perfect sunny conditions in Nelson.

On the final day of racing, the weather took a dramatic turn, with wet and wintry conditions setting in for the combined Senior Open Men’s 105km road race, which featured nearly 1000m of elevation gain. Jack, one of the youngest riders in the field, produced an outstanding ride - breaking away with another senior rider around the 60km mark. Maintaining an exceptional average speed of 42km/h, he helped set a new course record and finished a commendable second overall, earning the silver medal in the Open Men’s category.
