METHVEN — It was classic mid-winter rugby weather on Wednesday, July 8th, as the Mount Hutt College First XV hosted a touring Australian side from Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School.
The elements served up a brutally cold and wet afternoon, turning the pitch into a muddy battleground. Standing across from the Mount Hutt boys was a formidable Farrer Memorial squad. Made up of seasoned 17 and 18-year-olds, the visitors held a distinct size and weight advantage over the local lads.
Despite the daunting physical deficit and the driving rain, Mount Hutt refused to be intimidated. From the opening whistle, the local boys put on a masterclass in grit, throwing themselves into tackles and contesting every breakdown with fierce determination. The slippery conditions made handling a nightmare, turning the match into a forward-dominated clash of attrition.
Farrer Memorial utilized their size effectively, crashing through the heavy mud to dot down crucial points. However, Mount Hutt countered with relentless spirit and tactical resilience, keeping themselves within striking distance until the final whistle.
