MHC Mural Project Continues

This year Mount Hutt College were again the lucky recipients of funds from the Creative
Communities Scheme (CCS). CCS helps to fund local arts projects. Each year Creative New Zealand
provides funding to Ashburton District Council, among others, to distribute in their area. The
scheme supports more than 1,800 projects every year. This is the fourth year MHC has been
successful with a project application. Beginning in 2023, a group of students worked on a project
with local artist Karen Smith, and created a stunning mural featuring our Methven and foothills
landscape. You can see this mural on the outside of our hall foyer.

For the past three years, our students have been working on a series of smaller murals, each
representing the culture of a group at Mount Hutt College. Each mural is a collaborative piece,
where a group of students have contributed individual pieces representing important aspects of
their culture. This is part of a wider long term project to create a series of murals of all the
cultures represented at college. This year, we have now added murals celebrating the importance

of our students’ cultures from Brazil and Japan. We are thrilled to be able to celebrate the life
experiences, stories, and cultures of our students.

Pictured here (left to right) are our Brazilian exchange students, Cauane Do Nascimento Barreto,
Giovana Agustineti and Ana Laura Pinto Da Silva; with project leader, teacher Kirsty Saxon. Their
cultural mural for Brazil was installed this week. Thank you to the CCS for their support, and the
opportunity to build our arts vision at MHC.
