Mount Hutt College Student Selected for New Zealand U19 Cycling Team

Preview J Gorrie

Mount Hutt College Year 12 student Jack Gorrie has recently achieved a significant milestone in his sporting journey, earning selection to the New Zealand Under-19 Road Cycling Team to compete at the prestigious Tour de l'Abitibi in Canada this July.

The six-day international stage race, held from 14–19 July, is regarded as one of the world's premier junior cycling events and attracts more than 170 of the best young riders from across the globe. For many professional cyclists, the Tour de l'Abitibi has served as an important stepping stone to careers on the international stage.

Jack's selection reflects the commitment to success, balancing the demands of a high-performance cycling programme alongside his studies at College, he has continued to excel both on and off the bike.

In a relatively short period of time, Jack has progressed through regional and national competition, producing a series of impressive performances. Highlights include; winning the Tasman Classic Open Men's Road Race, finishing second in the Open Men's Road Race and third in the Open Men's Time Trial at the New Zealand Age Group National Championships, and placing 10th in the Under-19 Elite Men's Road Race at the National Championships in Cambridge. These results have seen him successfully transition into racing against older and more experienced competitors while continuing to develop as an athlete.

Jack would like to acknowledge the support he has received from his family, teachers, school friends, teammates, Mount Hutt College community, the Tinwald Cycling Club, and the wider Canterbury Cycling community. He credits much of his development to the encouragement and mentoring he has received from those around him and hopes to inspire younger riders coming through the sport.

Representing New Zealand on the international stage is an exciting opportunity, but it also comes with significant costs. The total cost of attending the tour has been set at around $10,000, with a high degree of uncertainty due to the current global fuel crisis. Cost for the tour include flights, accommodation, transport, equipment, and team expenses.

As a school community, we are incredibly proud of Jack's achievement and wish him every success as he prepares to pull on the silver fern and represent both New Zealand and Mid Canterbury in Canada next month.

We look forward to following his journey and sharing updates from the tour with our community.
