Fundraiser for Nepal Disaster

At the end of Term 3, the Cultural Committee and the Junior Council held a fundraising event for
the Nepal disaster. A flash flood struck central Nepal's Gorkha district on October 11 2026.
Around 24 houses and 4 suspension bridges were swept away, over 1,400 people died and over
5000 are still missing. Mount Hutt College was able to raise $700 to add to the collection by the
Mid Canterbury Nepalese Association through a non-uniform day and bake sale. The total
amount raised in Mid-Canterbury was $7,148.77 which has been transferred to the Prime
Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund in Nepal. This money will support relief and recovery initiatives for
individuals, families, and communities adversely affected by the flooding. Thank you to all of our
students and families who contributed.

Kritan is holding the Nepali flag in the photograph. The flag of Nepal is unique because it's the
only national flag in the world that isn't a quadrilateral (a shape with four straight sides, like a
square or rectangle). The main color of the flag is bright red, which is linked to the national flower
of Nepal, the rhododendron; the wide blue border stands for peace; the top triangle has a white,
crescent moon with a rising sun inside it; the bottom, larger triangle shows a white,
twelve-pointed sun. These symbols represent the hope that Nepal will last as long as the sun and
moon are in the sky.
